Inspired by the vision of poppy heads against a glorious sunset, the compact joy of a poppy after it has flowered is a tactile memory of mine from childhood. I often return to them, creating them from explosions of ink on wet paper, the chasing drips becoming stalks against the glow. I create the intense colour of the background by underpainting in gold, then washing it over with transparent inks in orange and red.
