Morganna
Also known as Morgan Le Fey, Morganna was supposedly the half sister of Arthur Pendragon, or Kind Arthur. The classic tale is that she was a witch, and promoted her her son, Mordred, as a rival to Arthur. Her role has been re-written in contemporary literature, sometimes as the last high priestess of a pre-Christian religion, sometimes as a healer who drew on a tradition that was being denied women as men colonised medicine, and often as a feminist icon. I drew her in black ink on paper, and then used candle wax to partially mask her hand and face before applying ink to the soaked paper to create her colour. I wove into this images and textures hinting at medicinal herbs, the natural world and power of will.
