Inspired by the novel 'The Mercies' by Kiran Millwood Hargrave, set in 17th century Vardø, a North Norwegian Island whose male population was almost all but wiped out by a freak storm, forcing the women to take on their traditional roles, defying tradition. This heralded one of the worst witch hunts in their history, commemorated today by an installation on the island. In the book, the author weaves a compelling story around the arrival of the Scottish witch hunter Absalom and his young wife Ursa, and the impact they have on the community, not least Marse, a young girl bereaved by the storm she foretold in a dream,caused by a whale from the depths.
